Women in Intellectual History

Our junior researcher, Brigitta Schvéd, will participate in the 2024/25 seminar series of the International Society for Intellectual History (ISIH), which this time focuses specifically on the role of women in intellectual history.

At the next seminar, on January 22, our colleague will present the results of research conducted together with Ferenc Hörcher, head of our Institute, focusing on Margaret Cavendish’s autobiography. During the presentation, Cavendish’s famous autobiographical text ('A True Relation', 1656) will be approached with insights drawn from the self-portraits of a near-contemporary female painter, Artemisia Gentileschi, touching on the phenomenon of early modern women’s self-image construction, contemporary societal perceptions, and the general social image of early modern women—as shaped both by themselves and by others.

The seminar series will be held online, with the session on January 22 taking place between 3 pm and 5 pm (CET).
